telc The European Language Certificates - is a system of examinations created on the basis of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the Council of Europe.
It was developed and is administered by the non-profit organization WBT (Weiterbildungs-Testsysteme GmbH - later telc GmbH), a member of ALTE - the Association of European Organizations granting internationally recognized language certificates and together with other prestigious organizations such as Goethe Institute, University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations and Alliance Française set standards that characterize the best language exams in Europe.
We are becoming more and more aware that Europe is a great melting pot of different traditions and cultures, and the key to knowing and understanding them are languages.
Diversity and comparability are the hallmarks of telc exams. They are available for 10 European languages at 6 language proficiency levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2
The telc CERTIFICATE can be obtained after passing an exam that tests the knowledge of the language, focusing primarily on the ability to communicate, not on the knowledge of grammar.
The TELC exam verifies 4 language skills: READING, WRITING, LISTENING and SPEAKING, and at all levels it consists of a written and oral part. The written part consists of texts for reading and listening comprehension. The oral part is a conversation in a given language.
The written part of the exam is computer checked at the Central Examination Office in Frankfurt am Main. The letters are assessed in two stages by two different examiners.
The oral part is assessed in the institutions conducting the examination by licensed examiners. After passing the telc exam, you receive a Certificate confirming your language knowledge along with your exam grade. Certificates are printed and sent from the Central Examination Office in Germany. telc certificates are known and recognized throughout the European Union.
Advantages of telc exams:
All telc certificates are based on the same level of requirements and provide - regardless of the language - the same range of language skills. These certificates are developed according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages of the Council of Europe and are 100% compliant with the requirements of this system. telc actively participated in the work of the Council of Europe in its creation.
What is the difference between telc certificates and e.g. First Certiticate or DELF.
First of all, language certificates in the telc system are identical for all languages (English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Russian, Turkish and Polish). The examination rules are also common to all twenty countries participating in this program. So, if someone passes the exam for a Dutch language certificate in Rome with a satisfactory grade, and someone else passes the French language certificate exam in Stockholm with a good grade, both grades are fully comparable, because all telc certificates are based on the same level of requirements and provide - regardless of the language - the same range of language skills.
Thanks to the Common European Framework of Reference, it is now possible to compare exams prepared by different institutions, and so the FCE exam organized by UCLES (University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate) corresponds to the B2 level, just like the telc B2 adVantage exam. The French DELF exams use new nomenclature also based on CEFR.
